Are there any benefits to lunging my horse?

Lunging is often seen as a simple warm-up exercise, however when used correctly it can become an extremely valuable part of your horse’s overall training and conditioning program. From improving fitness and balance, to encouraging correct muscle development, lunging provides a range of benefits for horses across all disciplines and stages of training.

Whether you are working with a young horse, bringing a horse back into work, or maintaining a competition horse during a busy campaign, incorporating lunging into your weekly schedule can help support both performance and soundness. One of the biggest advantages of lunging is that it allows the horse to work without the weight and influence of a rider. This gives the horse the opportunity to move more freely while still being guided and educated from the ground.

When performed correctly, lunging can help:

  • Improve rhythm and balance
  • Encourage relaxation and focus
  • Develop fitness and stamina
  • Strengthen topline muscles
  • Improve flexibility and suppleness
  • Reinforce voice commands and responsiveness
  • Help horses stretch through their back and work correctly

Lunging also allows handlers to observe how their horse is moving from the ground, making it easier to pick up on stiffness, unevenness, or soreness, before getting in the saddle.

Lunging can be incorporated into a training routine in a number of different ways depending on your horse’s workload and individual needs.

Lunging can help young horses:

  • Learn voice commands
  • Develop balance and coordination
  • Understand basic training cues before being ridden

Competition horses may benefit from lunging:

  • On lighter workdays
  • Before riding to encourage relaxation
  • During wet weather or limited riding opportunities
  • To maintain fitness between events

For horses coming back into work after a spell or injury, lunging can provide:

  • Controlled exercise
  • Gradual fitness rebuilding
  • Muscle reconditioning without carrying a rider

Like any form of training, lunging should be purposeful and well managed. There a few considerations to factor, in order to achieve productive and beneficial lunging.

  • Aim for shorter, quality sessions. Long periods of circling can place strain on joints and soft tissues, particularly in young or unfit horses.
  • Incorporate transitions, and changes of direction, just as you would if riding
  • Encourage your horse to move in a relaxed, balanced frame, rather than rushing around the circle.
  • Select an appropriate environment. Safe and suitable footing is important to minimise concussion and reduce injury risk.
  • Add variety such as pole work. When used appropriately, pole work on the lunge can help improve engagement and hindquarter activation, whilst keeping our horse mentally stimulated and focussed.

Lunging for Topline and Muscling

Correct lunging can be a fantastic tool for developing topline and overall muscle condition. Horses travelling hollow or inverted are less likely to build correct muscle, which is why the quality of the work is so important. Slow, controlled work in a balanced frame is far more beneficial than fast circles with poor posture.

A horse working in a relaxed and engaged frame is encouraged to lift through the back, step underneath themselves with the hind legs, stretch through the neck and topline and engage the core muscles. Over time, this can help strengthen the muscles along the neck, back, hindquarters and abdominal region.

As with all aspect of developing our horses, training is only one piece of the puzzle. When it comes to topline and muscle development, horses also require adequate nutrition to support muscle recovery, conditioning, and overall performance.

Ranvet Topline FX is a conditioning feed designed to support topline, muscle development, and overall condition in performance horses. Topline FX is a concentrated high-quality source of protein and essential amino acids, that additionally supplements key mineral needs of performance horses. At just a cup (300g) a day, used alongside a consistent training program, including correctly performed lunging sessions, Topline FX can help horses build and maintain the muscle and condition needed for optimal performance.

Lunging, when used appropriately, is an effective tool that can be incorporated into a variety of horses work schedules.
