Do Horse Supplements have a shelf life?

The answer to that question is yes, they do. Depending on the supplement and its ingredients the shelf life can range from 12 months to 2 years. Many factors can also affect how long a supplement will be at its optimum, such as storage and weather conditions.

The golden rule for supplements is do not use them past their expiration date or if for some reason they have been compromised. Sometimes it can be obvious if a supplement has spoiled such as

  • A sudden or gradual change in colour
  • The consistency has changed. Such as in the case of a powder, it may have gone hard, or if in pellet form the pellets maybe breaking down.
  • A strange or unpleasant odour (that is different form when you first opened it)
  • Can see visible foreign particles such as insect contamination or mould

There are some things you can do to make sure your supplements remain in the best possible condition

  • Store in a clean environment out of direct sunlight
  • Make sure you reseal the lids on buckets or close bags well after each use, this keeps them fresh and helps to keep moisture out.
  • Keep in a cool area as high temperatures can speed up the natural degrading of some ingredients reducing their quality
  • Avoid high humidity
  • Store well to avoid insect or rodent contamination
  • If you struggle to keep your supplements in a healthy environment buy smaller quantities so you are getting the freshest product more regularly

Use by dates are always placed on the packaging of supplements so it is easy for you to know when it’s safe to use. However, if you have any concerns or questions, you can always contact the manufacturer for advice and help.
