What
is Rain Scald ?
Rain Scald is one of the most common skin infections seen in horses. The
organism that causes rain scald appears in warm and damp conditions. The
condition is not life-threatening. However, any equipment that may
irritate the infected skin should be avoided.
Causes
The organism dermatophilus congolensis causes rain scald, dermatophilus
congolensis is not a fungus. It is an actinomycetes, which behaves like
both bacteria and fungi. A horse who has this organism in his skin may or
may not be affected.
Appearance
Rain scald can appear as large crusty scabs, or small matted tufts of
hair. There is usually a lot of tiny scabs that have embedded hair and can
be easily scraped off. Underneath the scabs, the skin is usually pink with
puss when the scabs are first removed, then it becomes grey and dry as it
heals. It can be difficult to differentiate rain scald from other similar
skin conditions. If in doubt, call your vet.
