Scientific Camel Care
Ranvet’s Skin and Wound Care Range for Camels
Skin diseases are
very common in camels, in spite of the fact that camel skin is tougher
and thicker than that of cattle and horses.
Fungal Diseases (Ringworm)
Ringworm is a very common disease of young camels, with peak incidence
being in the first year of age, typically associated with winter rains
or high humidity in late summer. Lesions start as small crusty, circular
skin lesions which can spread to cover almost all of the body. Almost
all young camels in a herd will become infected. Ringworm is a zoonosis,
with camel handlers frequently showing Ringworm infection after handling
camels, wool or equipment from infected camels.
Fungal infections including Mycotic Dermatitis, caused by Dermatophilus
congolensis produce mobile spores which are spread by insects during
periods of high humidity, to cause a "rain scald" on the upper body, or
typical matted scabs and nodules around the base of the neck, flanks and
legs.
Saddle Sores, Galls
Areas of abrasion or pressure under saddles and harness can quickly lead
to open sores, particularly under poorly padded or ill-fitting
equipment. Neglected wounds will often develop secondary infection.
Lacerations and Proud Flesh
With proper, immediate care cuts and other wounds of camels heal
quickly, but neglected wounds often lead to secondary infections and
complications such as excessive granulation (proud flesh), with delayed
healing.
Dermatitis in Camels
Bacterial dermatitis from organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus
frequently cause problems in young camels.
Ranvet's Yellow
Lotion

Tried and tested in camels, Yellow Lotion has long been relied on for
its antibacterial properties to control low grade infections in open
cuts and proud flesh, while its astringent action causes blood vessels
to contract, reducing bleeding & discharge, and controlling excessive
granulation (proud flesh) in open wounds. Promoting a dry wound surface,
resistant to infection, without forming a hard crust or scab, Yellow
Lotion is effective on large and small open wounds, abrasions,
granulating wounds, girth galls, saddle sores, and rope burns,
especially in areas which are difficult to bandage.
For fastest healing effect, apply Yellow
Lotion on a soaked swab held
in place by a bandage. A fresh dressing should be applied twice
daily. Before applying a Yellow Lotion soaked pad, first hose or wash
away any dirt, discharge or debris from the wound with Ranvet’s
MEDICATED WASH.
After the initial cleanup, do not wash the wound again. Simply re-apply
Yellow Lotion until the wound heals. If granulation is excessive in older
wounds, first use a combination of copper sulfate (bluestone) dissolved
30g in 1 litre of Yellow Lotion. When the excess granulation tissue has
disappeared to skin level, continue treatment with only the Yellow
Lotion.
Yellow Lotion provides an effective first-aid treatment for open wounds,
rope burns, galls and saddle sores, providing initial pain relief and
reducing tissue fluid loss to help reduce infection.
Yellow Lotion Active constituents:
Acriflavine 0.9g/L, zinc sulphate 50.5g/L, lead acetate 50.5g/L, in a
500mL spray pack or 1 litre bottle.
Fungazol

Broad Spectrum Antifungal Topical Cream
A topical broad spectrum antibacterial and antifungal cream for use with
Ringworm and bacterial or fungal dermatitis, with a rapid, broad
spectrum action including activity against bacteria, fungi, pathogenic
yeasts and moulds.
First, remove any scab with MEDICATED
WASH, then rub FUNGAZOL CREAM
into and around affected area twice daily for up to 6-8 weeks, if
necessary.
White Healer

Antiseptic Cream with Australian Melaleuca Oil
Effective against bacteria, fungi and viruses, WHITE HEALER contains a
blend of 4% Australian Melaleuca Oils which totally inhibit growth of
Dermatophilus congolensis, Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas, all of which
cause primary or secondary skin infections in camels. Presented in a zinc
oxide base which provides an emollient, antiseptic and antifungal action
independently, WHITE HEALER provides a soothing cream with exceptional
anti-microbial properties, for use in all ages of camels. Zinc oxide
provides a highly effective ultraviolet sunscreen action for the
protection of unpigmented scars and skin. Australian university trials
confirm that Melaleuca Oils are 30% more effective than standard Tea
Tree Oil on bacterial, fungal and viral skin infections, and are
particularly effective in moist, humid conditions as seen in many skin
infections. For generalised skin lesions, first wash the camel in
MEDICATED WASH, then apply WHITE HEALER liberally to the affected area
once or twice daily. It is not necessary to bandage wounds. Suitable for
all skin bacterial and fungal infections, including mycotic dermatitis,
ringworm, sunburn, skin irritations and infections, cracked skin and
pads, girth galls and saddle sores.
Safe to apply to open wounds.
Available in 100g tube
Ranvet's
Medicated Wash
Antiseptic, Antifungal Wash for everyday use.
Melaleuca Oil is known to contain potent antibacterial and antifungal
properties to treat many skin conditions. It can be safely used on open
wounds and cuts, and is able to penetrate surface skin layers to reach
otherwise inaccessible infection sites. MEDICATED WASH effectively treats
bacteria and fungus
infections, even Ringworm. Before using any treatment on skin lesions in
camels, it is recommended that the camel be washed in MEDICATED WASH to
provide antiseptic action and clean contaminated wounds before
application of your chosen Ranvet wound care product. MEDICATED WASH is
safe for all ages, and pregnant camels, and contains no prohibited
substances or animal by-products.
Available in 500mL spray top bottles.
Nitrofurazone Cream

Topical Broad Spectrum Antibiotic Cream
Nitrofurazone is a topical antibiotic effective against a wide
variety of gram-negative and gram-positive
organisms, used as topical treatment of choice in open wounds, burns,
skin infections and ulcers, where
infection needs to be controlled.
Nitrofurazone is bactericidal for most common skin surface pathogens
in camels, including Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus, Escherichia
coli, Clostridium perfringens, Enterobacteria aerogenes and Proteus spp.
If fungal overgrowth is suspected while using Nitrofurazone
Cream,
wash the camel in Medicated Wash, or use Fungazol Cream or White Healer in conjunction, for effective wound antisepsis and fungal
control.
Nitrofurazone Cream may be applied to open wounds, or used under
bandages. Treatment of most skin lesions should last at least 5 days.
Dressings may be changed up to 3 times daily. It may be used as a
post-operative dressing on camel wounds.
Available in 250g screw-top jars. |
