A phosphorus deficiency can cause rickets and fragile bones, leading to fractures and lameness.

Phosphorus is the second most abundant mineral and is found in every cell. The correct balance of calcium and phosphorus is needed for both these minerals to be effective. Phosphorus is important in the utilization of carbohydrates, fats, and protein for growth, maintenance and repair. It is also necessary for the production of energy. It stimulates muscle contractions including those of the heart. Roughly 70% of the phosphorus ingested in foods is absorbed. Absorption depends on the presence of vitamin D and calcium. Excessive amounts of iron and magnesium can interfere with absorption by forming insoluble phosphates.

Calcium and phosphorus are required as structural components that providing rigidity to bone. Without these dietary essentials, leg weakness and impaired locomotion occur. Normal bone growth occurs within the range of 0.8 - 1.8 percent dietary calcium. Bone structural defects can occur when calcium falls outside this range. Dietary phosphorus should exceed 0.6 percent of the diet for normal bone structure. Dicalcium phosphate, meat and bone meal, and calcium carbonate are excellent sources for meeting dietary calcium and phosphorus needs in puppies.

Mineral requirements of the horse are complex. Many minerals interact with each other during the digestion and absorption process. An excess intake of one mineral may cause a deficiency of a second mineral.

An example of this type of interaction is the relationship between calcium and phosphorus. High calcium levels are capable of creating a phosphorus deficiency, even though the intake of phosphorus would be considered adequate. The preferred calcium to phosphorus ratio is one that is greater that 1.1 : 1 and less that 3.5 : 1 grams of calcium per gram of phosphorus.

Be careful supplementing minerals. Used incorrectly, many minerals are capable of causing more harm than good.

Trust only those producers of multi-mineral supplements, who have a long standing list of the highest qualifications in the industry.
