A supplement formulated to maintain good pad condition

Scientific Camel Care.

Ranvet’s PAD FOOD Provides optimum foot and pad growth and repair in working camels

The Camel Foot is Unique

The unique soles of the camel foot give the camel the ability to travel through sandy and rough terrain because of the very elastic pad. While very elastic, this pad is also normally very tough and impermeable, and is formed from keratin. Adequate dietary Biotin is absolutely essential for keratin production.

The foot pads of new born camels are quite soft and delicate and require time for effective keratinisation and hardening to develop.

Damage Regularly Occurs

Thick keratinisation of the pad makes heat and foreign body penetration extremely difficult, enabling camels to move freely on hot desert sand or thorny and stony stretches. Despite the many advantages provided by a healthy pad, damage can regularly occur. If pads are thin, worn, cut or damaged, movement is seriously restricted, and treatment can become a long term challenge.

Essential Nutrients Must Come From The Diet

Foot growth and maintenance is very much a process which must occur from inside the camel. The critical nutrients for pad maintenance and repair must be available from the diet, as nothing painted on the outside of the pad will be able to provide essential nutrients for foot repair. While treatment of most conditions including puncture wounds, worn and cracked toe nails, and worn pads, will require regular attention to providing clean, uncontaminated tissue from the outside, the real work of providing all of the nutrients critical to pad healing and repair and must come from the inside.

Nutrients must be available from the blood in order to stimulate repair and healthy function. The biotin in PAD FOOD is well absorbed from the intestine, for rapid use.

Worn Pads

Worn Pads are very common in racing camels, and are caused by excessive wearing of the sole when camels are kept on rough, abrasive surfaces, as well as from overtraining or over racing.

The pad becomes very thin and shiny, and ulcers may develop due to excessive wear. Affected camels require rest on sand, and also require adequate dietary supplements to repair damaged pads as rapidly as possible. Once repaired, further damage can be reduced by maintaining camels on a supplement designed specifically for camels.

Worn Nails

Worn Nails are also very common in racing and working camels, particularly when on abrasive terrain rather than sand. When tired, camels tend to drag their feet, especially the hind legs, and this increases wearing on nails.

Cracked Pads

As a pad wears, new keratin is manufactured to replace damaged pad tissue. If repair is compromised by reduced availability of Biotin, or its essential cofactors in foot pad repair, cracks, ulcers and pain can seriously delay healing and limit performance. The camel also possesses tough, keratinised pads on the knees, elbows, stifles, hocks and sternum, all of which are prone to constant wear and damage.

Specifically Designed for Camels

Ranvet's PAD FOOD is specifically designed for camels, to supplement those nutrients critical to pad repair and maintenance to keep pad structure and function normal and healthy, and to reduce lost training and competition time when pads are damaged.

Biotin - the rate limiting nutrient in maintaining healthy feet. Biotin is a B Group vitamin essential to keratin production and healthy feet, by encouraging keratinisation and the development of tougher pads, and stimulating pad repair. Being a water soluble vitamin, Biotin needs to be provided on a daily basis. Biotin is the rate limiting factor in foot pad repair.

While some Biotin is manufactured in a normal camel rumen, the increased demands for Biotin in racing, growing and working camels are often not met from the diet alone, and regular supplementation is essential in performance camels. As well as being essential for normal skin, coat and hair development, Biotin is also essential in many critical energy production processes, particularly in fatty acid manufacture and metabolism in camels. Oral supplementation of Biotin reduces the breakdown of Biotin in the rumen, ensuring that adequate levels are always available for foot and pad maintenance, to provide stronger, healthier pads.

Ranvet's PAD FOOD Provides All Essential Cofactors

Pad Food also provides the essential cofactors necessary for Biotin to be fully effective. These cofactors work in synergy, where all components must be available in the correct amounts at the correct time, or foot repair and maintenance cannot continue.

Gelatin- contains protein, amino acids and collagen, all essential raw material components of healthy skin and pads.

Sulphur - is essential for healthy hair, skin and feet pads in camels. Sulphur also works closely with B vitamins for many basic metabolic functions, and is part of many essential amino acids.

Methionine - an essential sulphur containing amino acid required for normal, healthy keratin and foot maintenance, as well as for fat metabolism and detoxification of heavy metals in the liver. Methionine is a powerful antioxidant, but as it is not manufactured by the body, it must be supplemented on a daily basis.

Choline - an essential B Vitamin required in large amounts, as it is essential for building and maintaining cell structure, and for nerve transmission and fat metabolism. Also known as an "anti-stress" nutrient.

Zinc - involved in a wide range of essential body functions, particularly in critical enzymes and cell functions. It is essential for protein synthesis, and in bone, collagen, cartilage, skin, hair and foot development. There are over 200 proteins containing zinc in the body.

Magnesium - is essential for normal nerve and muscle function, for calcium and vitamin C metabolism and normal electrolyte function, as well as being critical in the conversion of blood sugar into energy and in foot pad repair processes.

Directions For Use

Adult Camels: Mix 30g through the feed daily.
Pregnant camels: Give 60g daily during the last 3 months of pregnancy, and continue during lactation at 30g daily.

A measure is provided. One level measure holds 30g.
