Nitrofurazone Cream is a topical anti-bacterial and anti-fungal cream for horses, containing Nitrofurazone 2mg/mL, Zinc oxide 5g/100g and Melaleuca Oil 2g/100g.

An antibacterial effective against a wide variety of gram-negative and gram-positive organisms, Nitrofurazone Cream is used topically as a local anti-infective in skin lesions including wounds, burns, skin infections, and ulcers; to aid healing and prevent infection.

Nitrofurazone is bactericidal for most pathogens that commonly cause surface skin infections, including Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus, Escherichia coli, Clostridium perfringens, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Proteus organisms. While treatment with Nitrofurazone alone may allow the overgrowth of certain fungi, the added antifungal activity of zinc oxide and Melaleuca Oil provide broad spectrum antibacterial, antifungal and UV protection to damaged skin.

The exact mechanism of action is unknown. Nitrofurazone inhibits several bacterial enzymes, especially those involved in the aerobic and anaerobic degradation of glucose and pyruvate. This activity is believed also to affect pyruvate dehydrogenase, citrate synthetase, malate dehydrogenase, glutathione reductase, and pyruvate decarboxylase.

Zinc oxide provides an emollient, mild antiseptic and antifungal action, as well as ultraviolet (UV) protection on unpigmented skin. Melaleuca Oil 2% is known to inhibit Dermatophilus congolensis, Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas bacteria. When combined with the zinc oxide cream base, Melaleuca Oil provides a soothing cream with
additional antimicrobial and antifungal properties and mild astringent action to complement Nitrofurazone.

Ideal for broad antibacterial protection in skin abrasions, rope burns, rubs, galls, cuts, surgical sites and wounds, and even greasy heel infections, Nitrofurazone Cream should be applied after thoroughly cleaning any dirt or dried discharges from affected areas. Ensure cream is in contact with skin lesion for at least 24 hours. Nitrofurazone Cream maybe applied to open wounds, and may be bandaged onto lesions. Bandages or dressings may be changed up to 3 times daily. Treatment of most skin lesions should continue for at least 5 days. Severe burns may require a longer period of treatment.
