Back to Folactin Blue

A premium-grade mineral supplement providing three sources of essential calcium.

Ranvet's Folactin Blue is a complex and interrelated formulation of vitamins and 10 essential bone-strengthening minerals. It provides three separate forms of readily utilizable calcium.

Bone strength, soundness and growth are continual processes. Ranvet's Folactin Blue provides the ingredients your horse needs to counteract the bone killers in its normal diet. In competition, winning is everything. Feed Folactin Blue and give your horse its rightful chance.

16 minerals and vitamins at precisely determined levels.

While our research has clearly identified what individual minerals are required for optimum performance, the actual chemical form of each mineral used in our formulation ensures maximum utilization by the animal. The horse receives the maximum benefit, and wastage is minimal.
The actual levels of all the minerals and vitamins in Folactin Blue are critical due to the interrelationships between each in the horse's system.
Too little, or too much, of one can cause the loss of another, or ineffective uptake of a specific mineral.

Great care has been taken in establishing the correct levels of all the minerals and vitamins in Ranvet's Folactin Blue formulation.

Calcium's very specific role.

In the energy producing, high grain diet that you feed your horse, there lurks a potential performance killer - de-mineralization of the bone, with lack of calcium being the culprit.

We mentioned earlier that three separate forms of calcium are included in Folactin Blue.
Apart from being vital for bone growth, strength and re-building, calcium plays a life-giving role in the horse's blood-stream. All nerve, muscle and cell functions depend on the availability of calcium in the blood. If calcium levels in the blood get too low, the stored calcium will be taken from the structural elements of the horse's bones. When this happens, bone density and strength will be sacrificed so the rest of the body can continue to function.

Magnesium, a bone builder.

Magnesium is included in Folactin Blue because this mineral assists the absorption of calcium and is therefore essential for normal bone and skeletal development. Magnesium also reduces stress and irritability, and it has a role in muscle function.

With all cereal grains being deficient in magnesium, daily supplementation is needed.

Copper and Iron.

Another mineral found to be deficient in the course of our research was copper, and the levels of this mineral have been increased in the re-formulation of Folactin Blue.

The functions of copper are many and complex. Copper is involved in haemoglobin synthesis, maturation of red blood cells and the transfer of oxygen across the various cell membranes. In addition, copper is an integral part of collagen and elastin formation involved in the construction of tissues such as tendons, ligaments, bone and blood vessels.

A deficiency of copper is manifested in the form of abnormal bone development (thin bones), and swelling of the joints, shifting lameness and/or loss of performance.
Iron has been included in the reformulation of Folactin Blue. Although the body content of iron is small, its presence is vital to the function of all organs. As such, its excretion is very closely controlled so as to conserve body reserves.

Iron is an essential part of haemoglobin in blood, myoglobin in the muscles, many enzymes involved in respiration, and in association with copper and vitamin B12 is necessary for red blood cell formation. More than 75% of iron in the horse's body is functional.

Deficiencies can occur in horses boxed for extended periods on high grain diets. Although cereal grains contain iron, it may be poorly absorbed because of its precipitation as an insoluble phytate.

Zinc, Cobalt and Fluorine.

Zinc is required for normal bone development, protein synthesis and energy metabolism. Deficiencies are manifested by loss of appetite, poor coat condition and delayed wound healing.

Cobalt is closely associated with vitamin B12. It is involved in red blood cell synthesis and in the metabolism of carbohydrate, protein and fat. A deficiency is indicated by a loss of appetite.

Fluorine is an obvious inclusion because small amounts are needed to harden the bone structures.

Folic Acid and Inositol.

Stable diets are chronically deficient in folic acid, and this vitamin is included because it is so essential for proper bone marrow function and for blood cell production.

Inositol is included to assist the horse's liver function.
The role of Vitamin A and Vitamin D.
Vitamin A is essential for remodelling of bone, vision, integrity of the skin and mucous membranes, and for resistance to infection. Loss of appetite and hoof problems are indications of Vitamin A deficiency.

Fresh green feed is largely unavailable to stabled horses, which makes them particularly prone to vitamin A deficiencies. It is for this reason that high levels of this vitamin are included in Folactin Blue.

Vitamin D plays a vital role in the proper absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus in the process of building and laying down of new bone.

Another important function of Vitamin D is the role it plays in maintaining the necessary levels of calcium in the horse's blood stream.

With sunshine being the primary source of this vitamin, it is obvious that stabled horses require supplementary vitamin D in their daily diet. Folactin Blue provides all that your horse needs.

For strong, hard bones.

How many times have you been forced to turn a horse out because it was chronically lame, sore in the joints or because its legs just wouldn't stand up? Are your two year olds particularly prone to these conditions?

You are now aware that the root of these problems lies in the feed bin.
Your answer is to overcome the chronic mineral deficiencies by feeding Ranvet's Folactin Blue on a daily basis.

A specific mineral supplement for stabled horses.

Folactin Blue is a premium grade mineral supplement which has been formulated to meet the specific mineral requirements of stabled horses being fed high grain diets. Due to their unnatural environment horses in work have very different mineral and vitamin requirements from horses at pasture. Folactin Red is Ranvet's specific mineral supplement for horses at pasture.

Extensive research determines new formula.

The Folactin Blue that you feed today is a re-formulation from that which existed over the last 15 or so years. This recent re-formulation was brought about by Ranvet's extensive research involving over 1400 blood analyses performed on large groups of thoroughbred racehorses in training. These horses were doing both fast and slow work, and the blood tests were carried out over a full year under varying climatic conditions.

Directions for use:
Note: as FOLACTIN contains a Copper salt, care should be taken when administering to horses whose diet is copper sufficient. Mix the powder thoroughly through the feed; or alternatively, mix with a little dampened feed and add to the full feed. A measuring spoon is enclosed. ONE LEVEL measure equals one 30g dose.
