When a horse is performing in hot
and/or humid conditions, up to 15 litres of sweat can be lost in just
one hour.
Electrolytes and sodium losses in the sweat can be quite significant and
if they are not replaced, performance, health and vitality will suffer.
The spectrum of electrolytes include potassium, chloride, calcium and
magnesium and in addition to the these, common salt provision can
replace the most abundant electrolyte, sodium.
The concentration of electrolytes in horse sweat is much greater than
that of plasma, making the horse more susceptible to sweating when
compared to other mammals such as humans. Importantly to consider is the
concentration of electrolytes within sweat will vary depending on the
type and intensity of exercise and that not all electrolytes are lost in
equal concentrations.
