Technical Issues Complete Vitamin and Mineral Supplement

Indications:

Irrespective of the quality of the feed ration or environment, the intake of essential dietary nutrients is likely to be deficient. Supplementation is essential for both,
(a) optimum growth, development and reproduction,
(b) to ensure maximum body function and athletic efficiency

Nutrient deficiencies occur as a result of adverse growing conditions, poor or depleted soils, the effects of sun and poor storage practices, and even processing of finished feeds.

Stabled horses are particularly prone to nutrient deficiencies (vitamins, minerals and trace elements), but paddocked, pregnant and growing animals are all highly susceptible, depending on pasture and feed quality, season, and environment. In addition, pleasure horses are not always fed the highly complex high energy diets fed to racing thoroughbreds, and they typically rely more on available pastures, hays and more basic diets where nutrient deficiencies affecting growth, development and performance can have devastating consequences.

Huge increases in daily requirements for essential nutrients imposed by hard work
Horses in training and competition require supplementation simply to meet the increased nutritional demands imposed by strenuous work, plus the increased need for tissue repair and maintenance.

If any essential nutrient is not available at the time it is required, all tissue repair, growth, energy production and performance cease until the essential nutrient is obtained. In the case of performance nutrition, prevention is better than cure.

Some essential nutrients required on a daily basis
The B group vitamins, for example, are water soluble and not stored in the body. They must be taken in on a daily basis. If any of the B group vitamins are deficient then energy production processes will suffer significantly – a common cause of poor performance.

Other essential nutrients are critical components of structure and function
Vitamin A is essential for all growth processes, including normal vision, bone remodelling in growing horses, tendon strength, mucous membrane integrity. Vitamin A is not manufactured by the horse – it must come from the diet. Also involved in formation of antibodies and disease resistance. Maintains reproductive performance.

Vitamin D deficiency can occur in horses stabled for long periods with little or no natural sunlight. A deficiency depresses calcium and phosphorus uptake, leading to stiffness, lameness, weak bones and swollen joints. Involved in prevention of rickets (young horses) and osteomalacia (older horses).

Vitamin E is a potent natural antioxidant which preserves cell membranes and protects cells from free radical damage during work. It is also essential to optimum fertility and breeding performance in mares and stallions. Helps prevent and treat Tying Up. Improves fat metabolism when horses are fed high fat diets.

Vitamin B1 is critically involved in carbohydrate metabolism to produce energy. Heavy sweating and work increase the demands for Vitamin B1. Required on a daily basis. Essential for normal muscle and nerve function. Helps maintain appetite.

Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) is also critical for energy production from carbohydrates, growth, and efficient feed utilisation. Required on a daily basis. Maintains integrity of skin & mucous membranes.

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), in association with niacin, is critical for energy production and blood cell formation. Required on a daily basis, and often deficient in feeds. Required for normal nerve function.

Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) is involved in protein, carbohydrate and fat metabolism, as well as working in conjunction with folic acid to maintain red blood cell production. Vitamin B12 contains the essential mineral cobalt.

Niacin is another water soluble B group vitamin required on a daily basis and used in metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and amino acids, as well as red blood cell formation.

Pantothenic acid is a B group vitamin involved in carbohydrate, proteins and fat conversion into energy. Cereal grains are deficient in this vitamin, so it is essential when horses are fed high grain diets. Essential to reproduction and normal nerve function. Improves skin & hair coat condition.
Choline is a B group vitamin essential in building and maintaining cell structures and in nerve impulse transmission. It is also critical to normal liver function and in fat metabolism for energy.

Inositol helps in fat metabolism and nerve transmission.

Copper is essential for bone development, haemoglobin formation in red blood cells, joint cartilage maintenance, connective tissue repair and the uptake and utilisation of iron. Mare’s milk is low in copper and abnormal bone development can occur in deficient foals. Maintains coat colour, maintains fertility and helps prevent skeletal growth disorders (DOD).

Zinc is a mineral essential for normal bone, cartilage and hoof development, wound healing, skin health and function, minimises the incidence of DOD disorders in young growing horses.

Iodine can be deficient in late pregnant mares, and foals are either born dead or too weak to stand and suckle. Is a component of thyroid hormones which regulate a wide variety of metabolic processes.

Cobalt is critical for the formation of the oxygen carrying component of red blood cells (haemoglobin), and is an essential component of Vitamin B12. Deficiency results in anaemia.

Sodium & Chloride are essential in maintaining normal fluid balance through their action as major electrolytes. Prevent dehydration, and essential to maintain normal muscle contraction, nerve function and digestion of nutrients. Sodium improves the palatability of feeds. Replaces salt lost in sweat.

Potassium is involved in many essential metabolic processes, including assisting the maintenance of fluid balance, utilisation of dietary nutrients, normal muscle and nerve function, energy metabolism and heart function.

Phosphorus is critically involved in energy metabolism, nerve function, bone formation and strengthening, muscle function, and in the buffering systems in blood and other body fluids.

Magnesium is an important mineral in many aspects of normal metabolism, including muscle function, bone formation, and reducing nervous behaviour in some horses.

Summary

Complete Vitamin and Mineral Supplement complements common pleasure horse diets by providing an adequate intake of the essential nutrients. Higher daily requirements for these essential nutrients are found in horses subjected to the physical stress of competition and training, especially under normal stable conditions where high grain diets are often fed, and access to fresh green feed can be limited, or when available pasture does not meet all nutrient requirements on a daily basis.

Supplementary vitamins and minerals are often required when absorption is impaired, as with diarrhoea or gastrointestinal upset, and certain liver conditions, while kidney conditions and lactation often cause increased vitamin excretion.

Exhaustive dietary evaluations conducted by Ranvet on a wide variety of equine performance diets both domestically and internationally, have confirmed that Complete Vitamin and Mineral Supplement is particularly appropriate, and successful, at providing, and balancing, the required levels of the common essential nutrients found to be lacking in the majority of pleasure horse diets. In conjunction with Ranvet Salkavite (electrolyte supplement), it is the most common nutritional additive used to successfully balance the majority of pleasure horse and show horse diets under evaluation in Ranvet trials.

Contains high levels of linseed meal for excellent coat conditioning.

Features: Benefits:

1. Supplies B group vitamins. Essential for energy conversion from carbohydrates, proteins and fats, especially in high grain/high energy diets

2. Supplies the essential minerals calcium. Ensures adequate bone development and
potassium, manganese, phosphorus and zinc strength, muscle and nerve function.

2. Supplies all essential nutrients commonly. Efficiently balances deficient diets,
deficient in most diets particularly high grain diets or poor pasture.

4. Safe for stallions, pregnant & lactating mares. Does not contravene racing rules. Non-toxic.
foals and training horses

5. Powder for distribution through food. Does not sift out. Easily mixed into food

6. High levels of linseed meal. Excellent coat conditioning

Pleasure horses often do not receive the complex, balanced diets received by racehorses in training, hence essential minerals may also be deficient, in addition to vitamins and trace elements.

Where Ranvet Aminovite Plus is specifically formulated for highly stressed, stabled racehorses and performance horses, Complete Vitamin and Mineral Supplement is specifically formulated to cater for the wider requirements of pleasure horses.
