Ranvet's founder
Ranvet's founder
Dr Percy Sykes, AM, M.R.C.V.S., M.A.C.V.Sc.

With his pioneering efforts in this highly specialised area of equine veterinary science, Dr Sykes has revolutionised the way performance horses are fed and trained. Horses are now raced earlier, trained harder and remain in work for longer periods than was ever considered possible 40 years ago. While our efforts may be concentrated on the requirements of the high performance horse, the majority of our products are equally suited to the needs of the horses engaged in recreational pursuits.

Dr Sykes' laboratory findings and extensive fieldwork defined the need for specific electrolyte therapy, vitamin and mineral supplementation, body acid neutralisers and alkali reserve replacers. He clearly identified the essential role of protein in the horse's diet and the importance of a correct amino acid balance for maximum utilisation of that protein.

It could be said that the Ranvet product range was born out of a concerned veterinary surgeon's observations of horses being trained in a very unnatural environment, being fed extremely high carbohydrate diets and being subjected to continual mental and physical stresses.

Every product in the Ranvet range has been developed to meet a horse's most specific need at any given time, be it in a training environment or on a breeding farm.

Laboratory research defines the need and determines each product's formulation. A perfect example of this principle is Ranvet 500, our growth supplement for stud horses.

In determining the final formulation of Ranvet 500, over 1000 blood and milk analyses were carried out over a two-year period on different stud farms. We believe the scale of this research to be the most comprehensive ever conducted into the nutritional requirements of pregnant and lactating mares and of young, growing horses.

In addition to our feed supplements and medications, Ranvet also market a range of specialty veterinary pharmaceuticals, which includes Ulcerguard and Lang's Solution.

For over 40 years, Ranvet has specialised exclusively in the field research on horses. Extensive studies continue to be carried out on racehorses in training and on broodmares and young, growing horses on breeding farms.

Having pioneered the formulation of specific medications and dietary supplements for horses, the company is now recognised as a leader in the areas of equine health and nutrition.
