Ramidex
Potent Anti-inflammatory, Antipyretic and Analgesic Injection for Horses
and Dogs
A powerful anti-inflammatory combination
as recommended by Dr. Percy Sykes AM, M.R.C.V.S., M.A.C.V.Sc.
Each mL of Ramidex contains:
Ramifenazone 140mg
Phenylbutazone sodium 70mg
Dexamethasone 0.5mg
As a 20mL sterile injection
Ramifenazone - is a potent NSAID anti-inflammatory agent which reduces
blood vessel permeability to reduce swelling and tissue fluid loss;
analgesic and antipyretic. Ramifenazone has similar properties to
phenylbutazone, and is included for additive effect, allowing reduction
in the dosage of the more toxic phenylbutazone component.
Phenylbutazone has well known anti-inflammatory, analgesic and
antipyretic activity. Its central stimulating action is compensated by
the central suppressive and anticonvulsant activity of Ramifenazone. The
addition of the NSAID Ramifenazone allows reduced dosages of
phenylbutazone, thus reduced toxicity, while still exerting potent
anti-inflammatory effects.
Dexamethasone has strong anti-inflammatory, antiexudative,
antiproliferative and antiallergic activity.
The complementary interaction of these three compounds, increases
efficacy, making reduced dosages of the individual components possible.
Indications:
Conditions requiring anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic or
antirheumatic effect in horses and dogs.
Contraindications:
Late pregnancy or in the first few weeks of life.
Osteoporosis, diabetes mellitus, cardiac, renal or hepatic disorders.
Precautions:
Avoid perivascular injection, as swelling, necrosis and tissue sloughing
may occur. Simultaneous antibiotic administration is recommended where
long term therapy is intended, and when infectious processes are
present. Use of an intravenous catheter for administration may be an
advantage.
Withholding periods:
Meat: Horses: 28 days
Competition: Horses & Dogs: refer to local racing authority guidelines.
Adverse reactions:
In rare cases where a local tissue irritation may occur due to
perivascular injection, these reactions resolve spontaneously without
serious complications.
Dosage and Administration:
Administer according to bodyweight and response required.
Horses: 5mL/100kg (to a maximum of 20mL per dose) by slow intravenous
injection.
Large Dogs: 0.05mL/kg by intramuscular or slow intravenous injection.
“Slow” is defined as a rate up to 20mL in 45 seconds.
Presentation:
Sterile Injection: 20mL. 10 vials per carton.
Storage:
Store below 25º C (air conditioning).
Schedule: S4
If veterinarians intend using oral phenylbutazone i.e. Ranvet’s
Bute Paste as an anti-inflammatory course,
Ramidex is best used as the initial treatment, producing rapid high
blood levels with the added potent short acting anti-inflammatory effect
of dexamethasone to minimise tissue reaction. This initial treatment is
then followed up with oral phenylbutazone for the required period.
The use of Ramidex in this manner may assist in potentially reducing
injury recovery time and achieving optimum recovery. |
