Electrolytes and Acidosis

In simple terms, electrolytes are the essential body salts that are always required to maintain body fluid balance, and allow normal functions such as heat loss through sweating, prevent dehydration, allow normal body function - including muscle function, etc.

If animals are dehydrated, blood cell parameters vary wildly, reducing performance (and health). Just think back to the Australian runner in the Commonwealth Games marathon - she was badly dehydrated, and couldn't even control her body functions until she was re-hydrated.

Neutrolene, on the other hand, works to reduce excess blood and body acidity by neutralising the excessive lactic acid produced in muscles by hard (particularly anaerobic) exercise. This helps maintain body pH at nearer to normal levels so the body can continue to function. Excess acid in muscle tissue leads to muscle fatigue, a rapid drop in performance capability and possibly tying up.

It is safe, and very common, to use electrolytes or Rehydra and Neutrolene together, particularly in performance horses.

In fact, it is almost essential to use electrolyte supplements daily. Use Neutrolene if animals tend to develop muscle fatigue or soreness, or rapidly drop performance during an event.
